September 2, 2017

Free Practice 1 started under chilly temperatures for the 13 drivers of the F4 Spain Championship Round 2. The forty-minute session saw a neat domination from Bent Viscaal (MP Motorsport), who was challenged few times by teammate Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport). However by the time the chequered flag was waived, the Dutch was holding onto the top position, being the sole driver in the 1.39 window, with a clear gap of 3 tenths to the Dane.

A remarkable performance from the three Latin drivers, led by Marta Garcia (MP Motorsport) sitting in P3, Guillem Pujeu (FA Racing) in P4 and Javier Gonzalez (Drivex School) in P5.

Tuomas Haapalainen (SMP Racing) had to come in after few laps due to a technical issue and resumed the session with ten minutes to go to set the eleventh best lap only.

Alexander Smolyar (SMP Racing) showed his skills on fresher tires in Free Practice 2, going for the fastest lap in 1.40,302 while Marta Garcia did a fantastic job holding onto P2 only 0.173’ from the Russian. Lundgaard and Viscaal ended the practice P3 and P4, giving MP Motorsport all the reasons to hope for a double podium later today.

Alexander Smolyar

“Everything went better on fresher tires and new brake pads. Now I’m ready to get the pole position”

As the first flying laps came down, Guillem Pujeu impressed with his provisional position. However the disappointment was around the corner for young Spanish driver as his engine blew off, leaving him to start at the very back of the grid.

Finally it was Christian Lundgaard, winner of the three races in Motorland Round 1 who got the pole for Race 1 as Bent Viscaal ended P2 and Alexander Smolyar took P3. Nazim Azman, the newcomer from MP Motorsport scored P4 on his first ever qualifying session in an FIA F4 car while his teammate Lukas Dunner was P5.

Tuomas Haapalainen (SMP Racing) took the finish flag setting the 6th fasetst lap, just in front of Renault Sport Academy driver Marta Garcia. Drivex Shool first driver was Javier Gonzalez in P8 followed by Russians Nikita Volegov and Ivan Berets (Drivex School)

Christian Lundgaard

“It’s my first pole position in F4 Spain this season and I am very happy. I’ll go for the win now!”

As the lights went off at the start of the 25’+1lap Race 1, MP Motorsport Marta Garcia stalled on the grid while Nazim Azman had a disappointed start and Bent Viscaal had a jump start forcing him to do a Drive Through. Smolyar who overtook Lundgaard like a bomb in lap 1, was therefore leading the Race with Lundgaard and Haapalainen on his tail.

Guillem Pujeu who started from the last position on the grid, has his eyes focused on the podium and overtook all his competitors one by one to reach the podium on the penultimate lap, scoring his first podium ever. However, due to his car being underweight, the Spanish driver was excluded from the results, promoting Finnish driver Tuomas Haapalainen to the podium.

Behind the trio, Lukas Dunner therefore finished P4 with Nazim Azman P5 for his maiden race in the F4 Spanish Championship certified by FIA. Bent Viscaal, Sami-Matti Trogen, Javier Gonzales, Marta Garcia and Nikita Volegov complete top 10.

Alexander Smolyar

“I am over the moon. I have been chasing this victory for so long, even in F4 NEZ. But now, with all the season still ahead in F4 Spain, it gives me a lot of confidence”

Tomorrow the day will start at 09.10 with Race 2, to be followed at 12.00 by Quali 2 and Race 3 at 14.35!
